The Measurement of Persistence and Hysteresis in Aggregate Unemployment

چکیده
There exists no consensus regarding the definition and the measure of persistence. We aim to spark research interests to address the lack of a standard definition. This paper reviews this issue and proposes an informal definition to unemployment persistence. Hysteresis and Insider-outsider Theory: a Literature Review
In recent years a large theoretical and empirical literature has emerged on hysteresis in unemployment. This paper reviews the theoretical part of this literature, including the various insider-outsider models that have been advanced to explain hysteresis. The review finds that while the assumptions required to generate full hysteresis are somewhat extreme, a less severe form of hysteresis, cal...

The Nature of Occupational Unemployment Rates in the United States: Hysteresis or Structural? This paper provides new evidence on the nature of occupational differences in unemployment dynamics, which is relevant for the debate between the structural or hysteresis hypotheses. We develop a procedure that permits us to test for the presence of a structural break at unknown date. Our approach allo...
متن کاملThe persistence of regional unemployment: evidence from China
The purpose of this paper is to examine the persistence of regional unemployment and to explore the sources of this persistence. Evidence from China suggests three empirical findings. First, provincial relative unemployment is more persistent than aggregate unemployment. Second, youth unemployment is less persistent than total unemployment. Third, although the western region has the highest pro...
متن کاملLong-Term Nonemployment and Job Displacement
The unprecedented rise in long-term unemployment (LTU) during the Great Recession has raised the question whether LTU contributed to the persistent decline in the aggregate employment rate. An important difficulty in evaluating this question is that standard measures do not capture the duration of joblessness for the rising number of nonemployed workers not formally classified as unemployed in ...

It argues, firstly, that the effective labour demand need not be downward sloping with respect to real wages and aggregate demand need not be downward sloping with respect to inflation; secondly, that there is a broad case for unemployment hysteresis, understood as endogeneity of the NAIRU, based on social norms in wage bargaini...
